J. Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon was the only varietal available in Puerto Rico for the past two decades. However, the request for additional offerings by American ex-patriates, as well as a rising demand for more complex flavour wines and super-premium brands led to an expansion of J. Lohr’s varietal availability to include their Falcon’s Perch Pinot Noir, Riverstone Chardonnay, and Los Osos Merlot. 

Stansfeld Scott’s Portfolio Manager for Wines, Arturo Campos, reignited an interest in J. Lohr by leading a sales training for Plaza Cellars Inc., leading purveyor and marketer of fine wine in Puerto Rico. Arturo touched upon the brand’s history and the role of pioneering founder Jerry Lohr with a presentation to the entire Plaza Cellars sales team. 

Founder and Proprietor of J. Lohr Vineyards & Wine, Jerry Lohr, grew up on a farm in South Dakota. He is respected universally by his peers for his intimate understanding of California winegrowing; and with his vast knowledge, he addresses any facet of the winegrowing process, from the day-to-day details of vineyard management to leading-edge viticultural research. An industry leader and one of the few remaining substantial independents, he is a fervent advocate both for the Arroyo Seco area of Monterey County and for Paso Robles, regularly investing his energy and resources to champion these regions. 

In November of 2016, Jerry was honoured by the Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards as an “American Wine Legend.” Hailed as an “industry icon” and “a pioneering winegrower” Jerry became only the third person in the sixteen-year history of the Wine Star Awards to receive this prestigious accolade.

The brand already has great power and even greater potential. Last year, 2020, marked ten years since J. Lohr were Certified Sustainable, and they also received the Green Medal Leader Award. With almost 4,000 wineries in California, the Green Medal Leader Award is the highest sustainability accolade presented to a single California winegrower each year.
